Course Overview

The GCSE delivers the Key Stage 4 Programme of Study for science and consists of fundamental ideas of the science for example:

Cells in Biology or atomic structure and bonding in Chemistry.
Skills handling units in Physics which are taught across each of the three science subjects Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
Core practicals are integrated into the main specification content so you can see exactly how these investigations can be included alongside the content to bring theoretical learning to life and the application of knowledge in the workplace.

Course information

The exams consist of a mixture of different question styles, including multiple-choice questions, short answer questions, calculations and extended open-response questions.

All papers are available at foundation and higher tier.

Papers are split according to topic, with half the content for each discipline in one paper (e.g. Biology 1) and half the content in the second paper (e.g. Biology 2). The first topic in each specification lists key ideas that may be assessed in both paper 1 and paper 2. There are six papers overall two in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.

Level 2 EDEXCEL GCSE (9-1) in Combined Science

During your two years of study you will undertake a work placement. You will also hear from a variety of industry speakers, visit careers’ fairs and attend workshops, trips and visits.

Learners develop the transferable skills which are valued by higher education providers and employers. Typical sectors include: nursing and healthcare, sports and nutrition, engineering and manufacture, biological and physical sciences and environmental and earth sciences.
