Date Name Entry
28/03/2011 Mark Olrog Just saw the posts from Brandt and Vear - all those names they mentioned came flooding back. Live now in Hook and have been married to Helen for over 25 years, and have two boys Sebastian and Alistair. They are tall, talented and good-looking,much like myself when I was at Strodes.(I wish!)Oh that old Strodes' humour never dies. As previously said it seems successful now as a College so I can only say as we were the last intake when it was a Grammar school we obviously did our bit in the succession planning stakes.Get in contact if you remember me.Do occasionally bump into some old boys every now and again.
27/03/2011 Mike Brown Hi I was at Strodes Grammar School from 1952 to 1954 and remember Garth Monk whose Dad had a grocers shop in Station Rd Addlestone near my Dads shop Newsagents,Garth was a fast bowler who all juniors feared also a prefect i think He had a younger brother Clive who worked at the same co as me .I remember some of my class 2s White,Austin,McCleod Bentley ,Bates, Dulley Meuwissen Perry, Bywater .Our class tutor was dear old Mr Stamp and Cranky Cranham.Wasnt keen on Dep Head MR Brown but Squint Holford was a real character who ran the rowing as well.Other teachers were Cope who always picked the best sports boys as soon as they arrived in Sept .He was head of Pace i was in Cooper
28/01/2011 David Vear I posted on the old alumni a few years ago but my e-mail address has changed since then – from that entry I was contacted by former classmate Nigel Weare and Malcolm Harvey who taught French and was my form tutor – (his mum used to do my mum’s hair!). Yes I remember Per Ola Brandt (do you think they found any of your magazines in the roof space of the portacabin when it was dismantled!) and Stuart Black. I was in the “A” class of 1974-1979 along with Ainsley (I think he left after year 1 or 2), Bellerby, Blayney, Brandt, Cannings, Crouch, Hargreaves (the vicars son!), Hood, Hughes, Hunt, Igoe, Littlewood, Marsella (left in year 3?), Maslin, McAndrew, McIntosh, Morrison, Olrog, Parrot, Parsons, Phipps, Pickering, Putley, Taylor, Thomas, Trumper (left in year 3 or 4), Walker, Weare and Wells – how sad is that!! I could dust off my old school reports and reel off the names of all the teachers but here are a select few – Mr Elliott who taught physics, Mrs Strang the Australian Geography teacher, Rita Clegg – French, Mr Wheeler who taught German and had a very scary glass eye; he also had after school wine tasting! Can you imagine these days; a teacher serving wine to 12 year old boys!!! Mr Gouriet the maths teacher – his wife was my Infant school teacher. Reading the Old Strodians newsletters was interesting. I know Brian Gladwell – I used to live next door to his mother-in-law. I see they were posted by Robs Disbury – I used to work with his dad at the Post Office. After Strodes and the Sixth Form I worked for the Post Office for 15 years and finished as a manager. In 1997 I moved to rural Norfolk with my wife and son (who is now 14) and I work for local housing association. It is very peaceful here and a much slower pace of life.
20/01/2011 Jenny Alexander Great, finally found the central place to meet up with all of us who attended one of the most amazing learning places with character!
20/01/2011 Stuart Black Blimey, coincidence or what. A friend of mine who attended 6th form when it began has started a facebook site. After dissing her because the 6th form wasn't 'real' Strodes, here is the real site! I attended 74-79 like Per Ola Brandt shown earlier but he was in 1/2/3/4/5a whereas I was in alpha. I had a great time there as it was my stage and playground away from a depressing home life. I was the class joker, or idiot, subject to perspective and not popular as my humour was very acidic and sarcastic but, hey, it made me laugh!! My best friend now however, is still class mate Richard Davis, who sadly knows this off by heart - Baker, Black, Bowler, Brown, Chitty, Clarke, Crossingham, Davis, Drake, Fitzpatrick, Forsyth, Gale, Godrich, Harris, Hazel, Irvine, Lines, Lockyer, McCarthy, Payne, Rideout, Smallwood, Strike, Waller, Watson but I can't so apologies if anyone missing. The teachers were all pretty average to be honest (except Peters the English teacher who was MAD and Skinner the art teacher who grabbed my gonads!) and my parents thought it was a poor education (compared to Hampton) with no discipline whatosever. It was gearing up for 6th form so our books and desks were antique. I recognise some other guests here as they were the year above but the years treated each other mainly with contempt as they were old school and we were punks!!
17/01/2011 Roy Pooley I have just found reminiscences of life at Strodes. I attended there between 1947 and 1951 and despite finding difficulty remembering what I had for breakfast today, I am still able to recall a large part of the form register of those early days as follows:- Ansted, Ayto, Benson, Boyle, Carey, Clark (2?), Cook, Cox, Dolly, Freeman, Harrison, Harmes, Hoggard, ...Mash,...Pengelly, ...Pooley.... Reynolds, Warden, etc (memory is rather cloudy after that). I believe "Tony Benson" and "Mike Hoggard" (mentioned in an earlier Message {item 59} ) must be 2 of thos listed? It would be interesting to know if there are any more recollections from that group. Roy Pooley
20/12/2010 Bob Hogton tried to e-mail Garth Monk but failed - we both lived in Addlestone were his father had a shop and both played cricket for Cooper's House as well as locally in Victory Park
29/11/2010 Little Jim (Al James) Stumbled over this trying to find a school cap to wear to Mick Claydon's Year of '58 (restricted) gathering coming up on December 10th. Attendees will be Duncan Clarke, John Crockett, Pete Moules, Mick Kelland, Duncan Barr, Dereck Wade, Fred Stickler, Roy Smither, Neil Hope and one I've forgotten. I'm also still in touch with the Hazeldines (Roy '60, Paul '56) and my brother Big Jim ('56). I will pass on this website at the gathering and hopefully more will add their info.
11/09/2010 Per Brandt I attended Strode's from 1974 to 1979 together with the following people whose names I can still remember:- Graham Wells Steve Parrot Nigel Weare Neil Putley Julian Waller Clive Hood Jimmy Igoe Mick MaCarthy Peter Marsella (who went to OZ) Parsons, Cannings, Blaney, Watson plus many more whose names I cannot remember sadly!!? Played football, basketball and member of the Rowing Club coached by the then Head Master "Belly" Carter in a very successful coxed four J14 crew with Graham Wells, Steve Parrott and Watson and Julian Waller (coxswain). I especially remeber rowing at the Serpentine Regatta in Hyde Park in 1977 (Queens Silver Jubilee Year)and winning the final against our arch enemy, an inner city London school whose name escapes me!? I still have the gold medal and lots of other trophies and tankards we won that season. I had some great times during my 5 years there even though we were the final intake of boys before it went from Grammar School to College so we were always the youngest. I remember in my 4th year very well when girls first started going there and always felt somewhat embarrassed at us still having to wear a school uniform. Teachers I remember were Brett, Clegg, Ashdown, Majewski and Webb ("Quackers"), in whose chemistry classroom I was never in for long after making duck impersonations or lighting the gas taps. After spending 4 years at Uni in the States and working in London for a while I am now living in Cheshire, married with two children aged 7 and 6. Get in touch if you remember me!? Cheers Per the Swede
05/06/2010 Ken Fallen Having a bit of time on my hand after retiring early, I was reminiscing about Strodes which I attended from 1962 to 69. I was therefore very pleasantly surprised to come across this site with its record of both teachers and pupils of old. I well remember Mike Trant and Chris Gore who are mentioned here. Other mates included the 2 Knights Ian G and Ian A, the twins Chris and Simon Coles, Michael Cole, to mention a few. I would be very pleased to hear from any who remember me from those times.
06/01/2010 Frank Garner I was at Strodes in 'Jock' Brady's era from 1957-62 when I left to work in the family business. Thanks to the grounding I had at Strodes, I eventually gained a BA(Hons)in Spanish from Birmingham Uni.I now have 2 children, girl of 14 & a 20 yr old son now at the Royal College of Music (see 'John Garner violin'on Youtube) I have very fond memories of both staff and students. Whatever happened to e.g. John Lake, Don Wright, Derek Wade, Chris Law, Terry Oliver etc.ec.
13/12/2009 simon marshall Interesting to read others memories. I was only at Strodes for 3 years (64-67) before family moved away to Devon, lots of entries from people who were there around that time but only one from actual year I was in - Paul Worth- who I remember plus all the names he mentions, which is amazing from such a short time all those years ago. Others I recall Terry Wellbelove, Graham Stephenson, Malcolm White who were also at primary school with me (Manor County, used to be by the station). Sometimes have nostalgic trip into Egham, nice place.
08/12/2009 Shane Jones I was at Strode's from 68-75 and remember Frank Davey and all those on his list. I spent about 20 years riding the IT gravy train before setting up my own tree surgery company in Worthing, Sussex I have lots of great memories - from Mr. Cranham's incredibly boring music lessons, the charismatic woodwork teacher Mr. Mathias and the psychopathic Mr. Brett who I believe was the model for the teacher in Pink Floyd's 'The Wall'. It is great to see so many ex Strodians doing so well. I believe we even have a member of Parliament in the rt. hon. Martin Salter (Reading). Good luck and best wishes to you all. Mr. Tree (Shane Jones)
05/12/2009 John H. Fisk M.B.E. I had a great education under 'Jock' Brady . 1946-1951 Member of Rowing Club and Strodes House. Honoured in New Years Honours List 1979 Had a great life and still enjoying it. Am Now living in South Australia
05/12/2009 John H. Fisk M.B.E. I had a great education under 'Jock' Brady . 1946-1951 Member of Rowing Club and Strodes House. Honoured in New Years Honours List 1979 Had a great life and still enjoying it.
30/11/2009 ted kearse 54-60 came across this by chance. Am surprised to find so few of my era on site, where are we?
13/08/2009 Mike Sibley At Strodes from 1959 to 1964 but with little to remember - except for Bloggs Berwick sitting on the school bully Gadsden in the playground!
05/05/2009 Neil McManus Just a very slight correction to Howard Osborn's post of 1/9/2008: The 'Reed' in your class was actually 'Simon Read' (nickname - spread). 'Reed' was 'John Reed', who was in my class of the same year. To add to the confusion we also had an 'Ian Reid' in our class!
03/03/2009 Ian Moir For no particular reason I typed in 'Strode's' on Google and found this site, and up popped several familiar names. I was at Strode's from 1954-1962 (Including a year in a third year 6th re-taking A-levels!) I well remember Paul Hawgood and Mike Barralet being very reluctant to take part in games, and all the Masters' nicknames. I am still a member of the OSA and have been to a couple of dinners, particularly the 300th anniversary. How about a reunion of the Class of '54 before we get too old and doddery?
13/01/2009 Mike Painter I have an entry in the "old" section but for those who haven't found it here I am! I was at Stodes from 1960-68. I was a member of the boat club for that period and still have the "pots" to prove it. I was fortunate to have a succession of great teachers (Mr Bloomer, Mr Regan, Mr Jenkins, Mr Stamp, Mr Payne and, most importantly, Mr Cameron. Above all, however, was the Head Master, Mr Brady. All these people helped me make the most of my time at Strodes. I had the good fortune to be School Captain from 1967-8. However, I never achieved my dream of being "Captain of Boats". That went to my friend Graham Bishop. Such are the vicissitudes of democracy! I qualified as a doctor in 1973 and went into "health protection". Much of my time was spent preventing the spread of infections such as meningitis and TB. I have now retired from active practice but I'm still involved in the same general area of work albeit in a rather esoteric sphere. My area of interest is now mainly in human BSE (vCJD) and, amongst other things, I chair a Department of Health advisory committee on how to decontaminate instruments used in surgery. Next time you undergo any kind of surgery consider that your safety depends, in some part, on an old Strodian!!
12/01/2009 Paul S. Hawgood Hello..I enjoyed (yes really!) my time at Strode's from 1954 to 1961...in the Latin then Arts stream. I have such great memories of all the teachers mentioned by others at that time as well as Stamp (geography), Willie Walsh, Fred Cranham, Squint, Revd. Preston and the French teacher Mcluckie...as well as those ghastly cross country runs, the terrible smell of the showers and trying to avoid the P.E. Anyone remember Mr. Green who sadly died while we were there..a kind of army instructor in P.E. Grunting Cope, puzzling Mulholland, school plays..all wonderful stuff; perhaps especially my own naivety compared to today! If nicholas barralet is around I would love to hear from you...likewise Michael Sanderson...
24/10/2008 Roy G Smith I attended strodes grammer from 1952 to 1957. would love to chat with some of my old classmates.
11/09/2008 Michael Bradshaw I left Strode's upper 6th (arts stream) in 1961 and am keen to organise a reunion of classmates some time next year, combined if possible with a tour of the school/college. If anyone shares my interest, please write to michael.bradshaw@telewalfer.lu Many of us won't be able to make it, especially if you live abroad, but it should be possible for around 10 to 15 of us to get together. Through Friends Reunited I've already contacted Tom Mackenzie and Alan Twelvetrees, and will soon be writing to others on the FU list who I think were in our class, including Paul Hawgood and Alan Sparshott. So far I've come across no mention, for example, of Ian (Zac) Webb, Graham Tilbury, Paul Evans or Brian Tartellin - not to mention Macquillan, Sexton, Butler, McLuckie etc. (sorry, the first names escape me!) - but perhaps someone out there has kept in touch with them. Please help if you can. As for me, most of the last 40 years were spent teaching first French and then EFL in various countries (9 years in London, Libya, Portugal and Germany), followed by translation work at the EU Commission in Luxembourg which suited me perfectly and ended with my retirement in 2004. Reading previous entries has revived memories of how formal the school was in those days (most teachers wore gowns and were rather stern in class, the only (in my memory, at least)exception being Mr Ashdown. A bientot
01/09/2008 Frank Davey I was at Strodes 1968 to 1975 and am inspired to add this entry seeing messages from my contemporaries, Paul Pateman and Dave Endersby. As well as the pupils in Paul's message, I remember Philip Murphy, Tom Belsey, Dave Barlett, Andy Bird, Phil Matts, Gary Collins, Mick Salter, Jez Hales and pupils from other years: "Spas" Richards, Colin Cramphorn, Martin Butler, Dave Barton and so on. Other teachers I recall are Linda Barker, Miss Potter, Quackers Webb, Johnny "'Old Up" Severn, Geoff Hart, Fred Cranham (not Ken, who is an actor), Horace Cope, Joe Preston ("I've seen better things crawl out of cheese"), Roy Gouriet and Malcolm Harvey
29/08/2008 Peter Robinson Seeing some old names on here thought I should put my bit on the site. I was at Stodes from 69-74 when I left to join the Royal Marines. Served for 12 years and served in places like Northern Ireland... not dislike some of the classroom antics!! and the Falklands War. Well I was never one to settle for an office job or the like so after the marines I went into upholstery and bar fitting, soft furnishings and flooring. Having taken five years out to go into the retail sector and ending uo as a deputy store manager for Courts before their crash I am now back to my tools laying floor tiles and fitting kitchens etc. However my claim to fame is that as a result of a photograph of me taken at the end of The Falklands War I am now represented in an 18ft Tall bronze statue situated outside the Royal Marines Museun in Southsea. Google....Peter Robinson The Yomper if interested. I suppose in hindsigt I should have spent more time studying at Strodes but to date I've had a full and satisfying life and have fond memories of the school. As the Head once said to me, Robinson you are always in or around trouble but you are never caught, maybe I should have gone into MI5. my contact e mail is peter@theyomper.co.uk.
25/08/2008 Patrick Acres Ok.. finally succumbed and decided to drop some comments. Was there from 1969-1974 when I was definitively told I would not be returning! Having said that I was grateful to be able add the school to my C.V., and worked in I.T. for a while (Ha! Mr.Brett!!!) before drifting into sales management roles and ending up training to be a Probation Officer at 50 years old. In amongst all that I had a serious stab at the music business, and still gig today. Remember so many people who have posted here, probably because if you were a prefect, you had cause to frog-march me to the office (true), and if you were below my year I was attempting to teach you the art of subversion! Would welcome any contact from anyone who would like to. Was in contact with Lynda Barker, Maths teacher, recently. Apparently she was a Probation Officer for many years until she retired. So... I suppose I ought to train to teach maths next... p_acres@tiscali.co.uk
25/06/2008 Rebecca Platt Was looking at the website with my daughter and saw Lindsay's name. Seems a very long time since I sat opposite him in economics!
22/06/2008 Lindsay Williams I was digging around in a box of personal effects and found some old Strode's memorabilia. Anyone there from the mid-late '70s? I've seen JP and Richard Carter's names. It's criminal to have spent so much time together and then just drift away.
18/02/2008 john mather Does anyone remember Keith Crane, whom I understand, attended strode's sometime around 1957-60's. Keith lived in Thorpe lea at the time and played the leading role in the 1956 ITV children's series "OVER TO WILLIAM". Like myself, he'll be in his sixties now. We used to write to each other around that time.It would be great to get back in touch. Anyone know of his whereabouts ?. I'd be so grateful for any info. Cheers, John Mather.
09/01/2008 Howard Osborn Alden, Brown, Card, Edie, Garner, Green, Gunning, Hatcher, Howard, Lugten, Marich, Mills, Osborn, Ottaway, Parker, Preston, Reed, Stannard,Thomas, Wensley (Brook?)
10/12/2007 John Pout (JP) What a grand old place this is! I was at Strode's from '73 to '79, when it discovered women about the same time as I did, though to both of us they remained a bit of a mystery for some time! People knew me as 'JP' - any old mates out there? I remember some great teachers like Eric Hall (did he really wear Harmony Hairspray?), Chris Majewski who seemed subversively brilliant to me and Mike Skinner as an inspirational Art teacher. If you remember me and you are out there somewhere, drop me a line. When we left we always said we'd meet up in a few years - of course we didn't but I'd still love to. Living in the Cotswolds these days, married with a son aged 9. I hope he grows to have as happy memories of school as I have. From a distance it seems like I loved every minute. Can't be true of course, but I'll believe it anyway. Thank you Strode's.
24/10/2007 Tarquin Ralph Amazing. I was back in the UK a year ago and Strode's looked much as it did, only it seemed smaller. I was there from 1963 to 1970 and had a great time. I was in Charter House and was a particularly ineffectual House Captain in my final year. I remember winning a special school prize for calling an ambulance when a First Former collapsed on the way to the Egham Hall for school lunch - it was my first day as a temporary prefect but seemed like the sensible thing to do. The award made no mention of the fact that I had prodded him with my foot a couple of times first to see if he was faking. Contemporaries include Gill, Borthwick, Dutton, Curtis, Troubridge, Elliot (in the Science stream) and Ferdinando, Hamblin, Pace in the Arts stream. I always though Keith Ferdinando would become PM - oh well. Jock Brady's son was a couple of years ahead of me. I seem to remember that he got about 3 million A level.
04/06/2007 Keith Jaggers Many happy memories of Strodes 1959-66
03/05/2007 Henry Phillips I was at Strode’s ’47 - ’52 in Charter House. Unfortunately I couldn’t find any postings from people of my era, although several staff names rang a bell. My brother is John Phillips who was the lab assistant during my stay at Strode’s and for a few years after. He retired many years ago from being a lecturer at the Kingston College of Further Education. After a year working as a lab. assistant for the British Leather Manufacturers’ Research Association I met Clive Goodall who had been a year ahead of me at school. He was then a Merchant Navy Radio Officer, which sounded like a fun thing to be, so I quit work and after gaining the requisite certification went happily to sea in ’55. I met and married a girl from British Columbia and emigrated to Canada early in ’64 and started at the bottom of the ladder as a Radio Operator for the Dept. of Transport. Slowly crawled upwards and retired as Chief of Training and Human Resources for the Marine Communications and Traffic Services Branch of the Canadian Coast Guard in Sept. ’98. In one of his more pleasant moments, Buster Brown once told me, “Phillips, you will end up as nothing but a common labourer.” Gotcha!! I’m now living South of Ottawa, Ontario in the town of Winchester and would be happy to hear from any Old Strodians.
29/03/2007 Jim Thompson I wonder if it is worth another try? - my fourth to get an entry! Anyway here goes: My memories of Strodes go back a bit more than most - 1956-1963. It all seems a very different world. I used to be known as tim/robert Thompson and was one of a contingent of boys travelling every day on the No 26 train from Camberley. I was into biology or rather botany under the keen influence of the then head - Jock Brady. Not known for his enthusiasm for the lighter side of school life, I looked at one of his speech day reports recently - urging boys not o take out of school jobs - to concentrate on their studies and then followed by a fascinating swipe at the falling standards of higher education caused by the creation of the New Universities - he meant York, Sussex, Warwick etc. For all that, he was keen that we studied something with a practical application and for several of us would be botanists this lead to agricultural botany at Bangor - Paul Briscoe, Clive Perrin, Dave Farrant. For me, Bangor was an introduction to the world of ecology which lead on to research and countryside and protected area management and on to where I am now - Director of the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management. During the course of all of this I even came across Sue Tunnicliffe in Bracknell - see earlier submission - although I had no idea she had anything to do with Strodes and in my era the idea of a female teacher at Strodes was - well!! There was one particularly inspiring biology teacher - a Mr Russell who left in 1961/1962 - I have often wondered what happened to him. Then I could go on about the celebrity teachers of that era, Willy Perks and the dance that was stopped by the Headmistrss during the last waltz because of too familar behaviour by the boys! But others have already covered some of that ground. Do such larger than life characters exist still? I look forward to seeing this attempt on the web. Jim Thompson
09/03/2007 richard carter Archer, Banks, Bates, Bickerstaff, Bowman, Brian, Carter, Catterall, Cheeseman, Cumming, Dunlop, Elsassa , Genziani, Glendale, Green, Harris, Hutchings, Morrison, Midson, Palmer , Saunders, Slater, Sylveste what was that all about?
25/02/2007 Paul Varney 1958-1965, many fond memories of the old school.
06/02/2007 Paul Worth (aka 'Harry') I was in Strodes from January 1966 (joined in the second year) - June 1971. I think it was our year, around 3/4th that started a school basketball team – the PE teacher’s name Estrich, or something similar? A boy from my year - Dick Hughes (his dad had a pub in Chertsey, went on to be School Captain. Dick was very good at football and sport in general. Other names I remember, Nick Hinton-Lever, Will Rixon, Pete Glover, Chris Norsworthy, a tall guy named Jenkins. Reading the posts, I have not spotted anyone I know except for the teachers. Messrs Brady and Evans (Headmasters) Sticky Stamp, Cranky Cranham (rumour had it that he was in submarines during the war) Hambling (Maths) Mulholland (Latin), a woman called Ensor (Maths). I seem to remember a tall woman connected with Biology that many boys fantasised over. In MY last year there was a lovely young student teacher (Maths again, I think) but the name escapes me - I used to enjoy sitting in the Library when she was taking the free period. With all those planes flying overhead, I got into plane-spotting - on the playing field and from the Chemistry lab Did any of you used to go to the ‘Happy Man’ pub up in Englefield Green, or was that just my year? Did any of you go to John's Cafe down by the station for a cup of tea, a Telford's meat pie or a smoke a fag in school uniform - ah those were the days!! I drifted into accountancy (Chartered) and have been living in Luxembourg since 1982 - the five years of French lessons actually helped, after all. Paul Worth
05/01/2007 Robert Hitch Woah! nice site.
23/12/2006 Christopher Legg Perusing the 1958 School photo and reading the anecdotes rekindled memories of past teachers and classmates Cranky Cranham,Holy Joe Preston Jock Brady Horace Cope Sticky Stamp et al Thanks for the memories from a time and country long ago
20/12/2006 Keith O'Brien Always interested in hearing about alumni, I was in attendance from 1960-1967. I know the whereabouts of only two others from that period, Michael Painter and Mark Brady. I would welcome knowing what happened to everyone else. As for me I live in Florida with my wife of 33 years after working in industry and academia for three decades. Currently I prosecute U.S. Patents and market and license technologies.
02/12/2006 Sue Dale Tunnicliffe Indeed- what a surprise that the old comments are gone and one recalled a lady biology teacher whom Malcolm Harvey ( was French master in 1970) says was me! Malcolm and I do reminisce along the same lines as a present comments. I was delighted that Dr Botham showed me round the college earlier this year- some of it had not changed, although the biology lab and the courtyard with all the animals had gone- green tiled corridors still the same and when i saw the film of the History Boys- the school etc. in that reminded me strongly of Strodes( as did the sixth formers in the play remind me of the ones i had!!) I often wonder what happened to all the boys to whom I taught biology- I am still in touch with several of my upper sixth and form) Steve Parker is a successful writer of children's science books, Chris Thompson is Medical Director of the priory Clinics and Nigel Edwards Director of several projects at EDF energy. All middle aged men now- which makes me incredibly ancient. I was first member of staff at Strodes to become pregnant- which is why I dd not stay very long! I went into primary teaching after as I was so interested in how children acquired their basic concepts of biology, taught locally in Bracknell then maths and science in middle school in SLough now closing and reopening as the Islamic school- very interesting experience working in a a 96% non Caucasian school). I left to go to Richmond LEA to set up and run an advisory team in primary science and design and technology. Then I was Head of Education at the Zoological Society my ex sixth form may recall a visit there) and was made redundant when they ran out of money. I did a PhD at Kings College London in science education (Talking about animals) then was a part time researcher in Cambridge ( also voluntary) with Revd Professor Michael Reiss who is now at the Institute of Education, London as Professor and is also Director of Education at the Royal Society. I do bits of research etc. Also a JP for East Berkshire, and do a lot with schools in Antigua- developed from girl from there whom I taught in Slough. Husband ( BOAC pilot when I was at Strodes ) went on into management at BA, then CX London Underground and is now life peer so I spend a lot of time in the Lords. A long way from Strodes days! The pregnancy resulted in a son, who alas died suddenly in January 2008 suddenly but my other son had son in 2004 so am now grandmother of Daniel and twins Luc and Josh were born in 2007, all being educated in a Welsh language school ( they live in Wales) . Husband is now Deputy Chief WHip in opposition in the Lords! I have many memories of Strodes it was an interesting experience and hope some of the boys developed an interest in biology as result of my teaching!!! It was very interesting to be invited back to the 300th anniversary event and seeing the new buildings as well as the main b block- corridors still look the same! Best wishes Sue Dale Tunnicliffe The Lady Tunnicliffe 18 Octavia Bracknell RG12 7YZ, UK 01344 454283 07710571445 s.tunnicliffe@ioe.ac.uk lady.tunnicliffe@mac.com
18/11/2006 Andrew Strong Pity indeed the old page is gone, maybe archived somewhere ? Looking at the new site rekindled memories of the 60s- here we go - sitting in Mulholland latin lessons (hi Kevin G., remember me, we often sat together through them, lots of laughs, if I'm not mistaken ?). with those unreadable old printed notes. Coming bottom in Wheeler's German lessons, (never thinking I would end up living there and 20 years later still fighting with der die das die). Cope, Cranham, Stamp - what characters. Buster (deputy head) was the best maths teacher I ever came across. Exploding benzine in Mr Elliot's physics, splashing conc. acids, and mercury, around in Mr Jenkin's chem. lab (presumably all strictly forbidden nowadays, pity). 07/11/2006 Maryam Ali Strodes was jokes! I had an amazing time here and met some lifelong friends. Thanks for a wonderful yet boring experience. Hello to Richard Pattison my lovely personal tutor... 28/09/2006 Paul Pateman Shame that the original page has disappeared. I was at Strides from 1968 to 1975 - just before the girls arrived sadly! Lots of happy memories of fellow students Mark Graham (still in touch with him), Kevin Harris, David Womersley, Adrian Lillywhite (drummer in The Members), Tony Wright, Ian Mitchell, Frank Davey etc etc, and also of many of the teachers - "Sweaty" Russell, Daphne Bain, Messrs Carter, Brady, Bowen, Mulholland, Brett, Taylor and of course the lovely Miss Barker. The school of the early 1970s had a great basketball team run by Graeme Taylor, and of course our strong links to Sir William Perkins over in Chertsey and our battles with Magna Carta. Happy memories - crab apple fights, 5 a side football on the grass tennis courts, the mini snooker tables in the 6th form common room, us prefects targeting the young trouble makers, organising concerts, and listening to the test match via an ear piece in Ken Cranham's music classes.
17/07/2006 kevin garratt On this new website can't find last year's fascinating gathering of Strode's Alumni recollections - has it gone, webmaster? Anyway, may I add a few recollections from 1959-66: first formers' school lunch crocodile meandering down Station Road past Drake & Mount's coal yard - its ancient, grimy Bedford truck always laden with bulging sacks; Des Paul's winter PE classes in the unheated hall; sloshing round icy Runnymede for Paice in X-country extravaganzas; prowling sixth formers rolling juniors in ('62 big freeze) snow on playing fields; scary doomsday playground talk during Cuba missiles crisis - Krushchev or Kennedy to obliterate us first?; HoraceCope's wealth of anecdotes about life on troop trains going to Poona; rise and fall of third form's High St sweetshop pilfering gang; Mulholland reciting Caesar's division of all Gaul into three parts; Johnny Bloomer 's green Ford Consul, Fred Cranham's two-tone Hillman Minx, Horace's tiny blue Standard sweeping through school gates entrance; Jimmy Wheeler's descriptions of bombed-out Berlin + tossing him a coin after his classroom German carol solo; ever-erratic behaviour of Sticky Stamp's projector; Paddy Roberts beneath floorboards of 1920s vintage restorations parked adjacent to cedars\Almshouses; Jock Brady (+inseparable pipe) digging onions in HM's backgarden; EH Hogben's tremendous descriptions of Kiwi ; Strode's persistent failure to beat Glyn GS at football; crap white toast at the Station cafe on rainy arvos while waiting for 18 or 28 train; penny ha'penny fare up the hill on the Aldershot and Riskit (in lieu of London Transport's 441); Adam at Recordwise always out to sell us Bob Dylan LPs; school social with Willie Perks (at Virginia Water scouts hall) - leather-jacketed classmates churning out Beatles: "well, she was just seventeen ..." ; bar billiards in the smoke-filled Red Lion, post A-levels.

I should like to contact some of my old schoolmates. Do you have any advise that I may use?
I attended Strode's from 1947 until 1954.
Yours truly

George.W. Packman.

2 I would be interested to hear from anyone who was at Strode's from 1989 - 1991. In December 1996, an informal drinks evening brought together about 30 former Strode's students in the Barley Mow pub. It was great to see former classmates!! Jon Woolfson (also formerly known as Noj!)

3

Yes - I'd be interested in contacting people too - I've tried searching for class names but have found no links so far. Is there a list of the current staff members - also is anybody in the boat club on the net, I would be interested in communicating with them. Chris Pollard, Colorado USA, 1960-67

4

Wow, Strode's on the WWW! I studied Maths, Physics and Chemistry A levels from 1982 to 1984. Please get in touch if you feel like it! Peter Moore, Database Administrator, IS Ops, Sequent Computer Systems, Weybridge, UK.

5

Well done on the Web Page. Looking good. I popped in on Strodes recently with Tamara Fletcher also a former Strodian. It turned out to be more than just a trip down memory lane - I was impressed by all the new buildings, extensions and up-to-date computer rooms. Tamara's old form tutor led us on a mini-tour of the new facilities and brought us to visit the new principal (nice artwork on the walls!) Thank-you both for your time. I wish the students and college success in 1998. As for myself, I am visiting friends and family in England for a fortnight before returning home to Israel where I have been living for the past two years. I am not on E-mail yet in Israel but can be contacted by post at: P.O.Box 801, Natanya, Israel. Any Alumni of 1989-91 keep in touch. Debbie Fine
Date: Mon, 24 Nov 1997

Are there any former members of staff who surf the net? If so I would like to hear from them. Rob Morris
(1983-87) rob.m@mcmail.com

7

How about putting an alumni directory together? I was interested to discover that there's another old Strodian, from just before my time, also living in Colorado. Graeme Davis, 1969-76

8

Yup - I'm up for a blast from the past or a trip down memory lane too.. Sarah Oldridge

9

I have just visited your site for the first time and was very impressed. Congratulations on its breadth and quality of information. I learnt of its existence in a recently circulated Old Strodians Newsletter. I see that people are using it to look for old colleagues. I am fortunate in this respect as the 1950 Form VA is quite active with reunions . However perhaps in time a data base of former students will become developed. Nigel Weare (1975-81) is based in Guildford as the Regional Coaching & Development Officer for the Thames Upriver for rowing, having taken up the sport at the school & college. Nigel Weare

10-1

Well well well, Congratulations to Strode's and welcome to the WEB. I would just like to correct Nigel Weare's entry. He did not 'take up the sport' of rowing. Our crew was heading to the rowing club in 'Belly' Carter's Landrover and were short of a cox. We saw Nigel loitering by the entrance of the school and knew him to be a small and highly cheeky juniour. "He'll do" shouted Carlo Genziani and we grabbed Nigel and threw him in the back of the Landrover and drove off. It was a very lucky choice, we had tremendous success and won the National Schools Head-of-the-River and had an unbeaten season. Nigel was a great cox and I expect he is a great coach. I haven't seen him since we were both peeing into a bush outside midnight Mass one Christmas about 12 years ago! So! How are you all? Me? *I'm Michael Swain (1970 to 1977)* chattering away here in sunny Bermuda. I have just completed my tenth year out here as a Chartered Accountant working in the re-insurance field. I changed my job (and my e-mail) about a year ago! No wonder I have not heard from you all. My new address is: michael_swain@bdacos.bm

All the best,

11 Whatever happened to Dave Brown - Media Studies tutor extraordinaire??? I believe you are still there and if you are able to receive this and can remember us - Rachel Dixon and Penny Roberts (class of 1994) would like to hear from you - to catch up/ have a chat about old times. Drop me a line at racheld@ehs.co.uk racheld@ehs.co.uk

Dear Everybody!, I'm so pleased to have found the web site for Strode's College. My name is Rachael McDonald and I was a 1993 graduate (just!). I have been out in California living the life of the not quite so famous yet! Yes another struggling actor, as if Los Angeles needs any more of those.I would love to hear from anyone past or present and am especially interested in hearing if Mr Majewsky or Ms. Freston are still around. For anyone just starting with the afore mentioned teachers listen and learn you have the best! That's all for now, you can E-mail me at Chad.Chapman@gte.net I look forward to hearing from you, all the best Rachael McDonald.

13

Well, well, well. When I was at Strodes (1972-1977) it was a Grammar School and then became a sixth-form college when I was in the fifth. What? Girls in an all boys school? Excellent! I saw some major changes whilst I was there. In 1972 a lot of the teachers wore capes and mortar boards. It was somewhat more casual when I left. No longer at Boeing, I am now back
in Surrey still doing aircraft interiors. Paul Hone - Paul.Hone@britax-aci.com

14

I was at Strode's and took A levels in Economics, Government & Politics and Law. It had by then recently turned into a 6th Form College. I am now a partner in a firm of solicitors in central London. I was surfing on the net on something else and I found you (I know I am not an anorak!) Nice to see there is interest in alumni as I subscribed to the rag which died the death long ago. Simon J. A. Tolson MAZZETTI@aol.com

15

Mike Watts. 1959-66. emigrated to Oz in 1981. I'd be interested to hear from anyone of my year. watso@cbl.com.au

17

Hi I'm John Smith and I was there from 1960 to 1967, a year after my coz Mike Watts who has emigrated to Oz. However I haven't gone as far as I'm in Wiltshire. Also my father, Desmond (aka John or even Vince) was there from 1933 to 1940 and was a member of the boat club and if any one was there then I can pass messages on (no not by a medium!) John Smith

18

Hi. This is Roger Kemp (1958-1964) now residing in Toronto, Canada. I learnt of this site from the Old Strodians newsletter. It looks great so far. My daughters were asking if all the year books would be listed! I guess I have to get used to North Americanisms. I work in the computer field selling LANs and WANs, if that means anything to anybody. Roger Kemp

19

I attended Strode's in its first years as a sixth form college, 1976 to 1978. Many happy memories of my time there; A Level Geography, A Level Law and especially the Rugby team. Still keep contact with a few of the old boys, but with the passing of time have lost contact with many more. No longer play rugby due to back injury, but now, with my two sons, am involved with Inline Skater Hockey as a nationally registered official and assistant team coordinator in Farnborough, Hampshire. Now work in Datchet as the MD of an insurance consultants. Like to hear from anyone who remembers the early years in Geography and Law. Philip Lofthouse

20

I stumbled across this page by accident and could not believe something like this existed. I attended during the transition from Grammar school to 6th form college, I was in the second year at the time. It seems a long time ago now. I was trying to think of some of the old teachers who were there then. J.J Evans as Headmaster, Mr. Carter, Mr. Webb our chemistry teacher and Mr. Ashdown the Art teacher, he had an illness (was it Parkinsons - I can't remember) , but still used to beat me in the dreaded cross country runs over Runnymeade. Anyone who wants to re live the old days feel free to contact me. I live in The United States now (Grand Rapids, Michigan) but can be contacted by e-mail. David McCarthy

21

hi fellow Strodians! I was at Strodes from 1988-89 and it would be great to hear from any old friends from that time. I've just moved back to Egham and have many a trip down memory lane!! Get in touch! Mark Westoll

22

Hello. My name is Richard Messingham, and I was studying at Strode's A Levels in Economics, Government & Politics, Classical Civilisation and Computing. I'm now fo rthe moment at The University of Wales Aberystwyth reading for a LL.B in Law. If there are any other Strodian's who did my subject, remeber me or read Law please contact me. Mr.R. Messingham LL.B (Wales) A Lawyer of the University of Wales, Aberystwyth.

23

I am Alan Wicks and I was at Strode's School from 1943 to 1947, first under the Headship of Capt. Gittins and latterly of Mr. Brady. In between those two, there was a longish period when Mr. 'Bowie' Heddon was Acting Head. Most of the interesting messages above make me feel like Rip van Winkle. I would like to hear from other survivors from this period. Alan Wicks

24

Congratulations on the site! I was very pleased to find this facility. I am Genevieve Cahill and attended Strode's from 1990-1992 in chemistry, physics and maths. I was so inspired by my time at Strodes that I am now at Cambridge studying for a PhD in Atmospheric Chemistry, working with my sister, Maurette Cahill (at Strodes from 1989-1991)! Maurette is also getting married at the end of August! Maurette and I would love to arrange a reunioin before the millenium, so please get in touch! Genevieve Cahill

25

The few dates noted in messages to this site suggest postings are somewhat sporadic. Anyway this one is dated July 15, 1999 and is from a 1961-1968 student. I seem to be the first from exactly this period. If there is interest, I have a 1967-68 "Form List" if memories of fellow students' names need refreshing. The other statistic of note is the high proportion of overseas postings, we have got around! Nigel Mills, Dayton Ohio

26

Greetings from a mildly astonished Mike Trant (dwarf '62-'69), now living in South Carolina...having enquired of Chris Gore about the possibility of an online 30 year reunion, he sent me this address, which answers my question admirably in the affirmative! Looking forward to seeing as many old friend's names come up on this page as possible...spread the word!
Mike Trant cmt999@earthlink,net

27

I hadn't checked the Strodes College web site for a while so I was delighted to find this opportunity to make contact with other Old Strodians. I'm now living in the United States, in Fairfax, Virginia, just outside Washington, DC. I look forward to hearing from former classmates. Mark Brady, 1959-1966.

28

Hi, My name is Andy Stoddart and I was at Strode's in the penultimate year of the Grammar School before it became the Sixth Form College. In 1973, the school was very formal with the likes of BArry Brett (Maths) being and extreme stickler for straight ties and impeccable uniforms. I have already used the Alumni to contact Paul Hone from the previous year but failed to contact Dave McCarthy from my own year. I have been working for an Aerospace company in Devon since 1984 and get to travel extensively in US and Far East. I have come across another from our year, Andrew Bickerstaff whowas running his parents company in Staines. It would be great to hear from anyone to catch up on where they are so send me an e-mail. Andy Stoddart

29

Hello to anyone who studied (well some of the time anyway..) at Strodes 1980 - 1983. Especially those who hung out in smokers' alley (round the side of the bike sheds!!) where many a rainy lunch break was wasted away. Not too mention all those "free periods" eating toast at the local cafe - can't remember it's name. What fun. I'm now living in Sheffield and married with a young daughter. Anyone remember that far back? Judith Wise (nee Payne)

30

I came across this page by chance and got stuck for a while looking and reading other peoples messages, I was at Strodes 76-77 when it just became a Sixth Form College. I remember how fresh it was after the nightmare of Magna Carta School in the seventies. Felt like I had been let out of prison. Strodes, were very uneasy about me taking o level art, so I took it at Night School, got an A grade, and then my C.C.C. advisor had little choice but to let me take an A level with Mr Ashdown. I am now a professor of art at St. Olaf College, Northfield, MN, USA. I enjoyed the atmosphere and freedom we had at Strodes, but it was a struggle to prove myself to the individuals who ran the C.C.C. course. I hope that program has long ago ended. Andrew Wykes
Professor of Studio Art,
Art Deptment,
St. Olaf College,
Nortfield, MN 55057 USA

31

I was at Strodes from 1972-1979 as a student, and 1986-1987 as a member of staff. I would be interested in hearing from anyone in 1-5 Alpha'72-77 alias Alden, Brown, Card, Drake, Edie, Green, Gunning, Hatcher, Howard, Lugden, Marich, Mills, Osborne, Ottaway, Parker, Preston, Reid, Stannard, Thomas, and Wigley (is that all?) , plus any 6th formers from '77-79, as well as anyone who was in the Boat Club, or Rugby Club (some of whom I'm still in contact with) while I was there. I am teaching in University Place - Washington State, about an hours drive south of Seattle, having been in the US since I started at UCF 1988, and lived in FL, AZ, WA & NJ. I'm hoping to make it back for a family visit and Henley 2000, so if you go past Upper Thames RC give me a shout just in case! Cheers, Paul Wensley.

32

I remember some of the names of students in the entries, as a prefect I DISTINCTLY remember Swain & Genziani, I wonder if they remember me??? Teacher wise, I was there with Mssrs Brady, Smith, Carter, Hodge, Brett, Ashdown, Bowden, Lovelock, Wheeler, Russell, Matthias, Jenkins, Elliot, Majeski, and some I can't remeber, plus I had Daphne Bayne for Maths and I remember a lady Biology teacher and an attractive lady Maths teacher. Student wise - my year included David Womersley - now a Cambridge don I believe, Adrian Lillywhite ex drummer in the Members, Mark Stephens Lawyer, often on TV, the Peskett brothers, John Proctor, Ian Mitchell, Pete Turner, Nick Brown, Frank Davey, Adrian Tubbey, Kim Smith, Tony Wright, Keiran Kapur, Mick Salter, Graham Box (now deceased), Nigel Faulkner and the one I am still in touch with - Mark Graham, plus many more who's names have slipped away. I also remember other cricketers such as Ken Graham, the Lear twins and Dominic Riley (went into the Red Arrows I believe) I still go to Egham as my mother lives there and look across at the old place with affection. I am also still in touch with one of the girls from Sir William Perkins.

Any others of this era around?

Paul Pateman, 1968-1975, Sector Manager Civil Government Compaq Computer Ltd

I have just found the site having looked for it for the first time this evening. I have been thinking about the old place having attended the funeral earlier today of Chris Ing, who once told me that he had attended the school in the 1950's.

I was there from 1965 to 1972 and have often thought about going back to see how it has changed. It is quite amusing to see the female names following some of the messages as I was at the meeting of the Old Strodians (albeit having only just left) that voted to dissolve rather than accept female members. Needless to say I was not in favour of the motion!

It would be superb to hear from anyone who was at the school during my time there. I have not moved far away, living and teaching in Maidenhead. Let's hope that someone comes out of the woodwork!

Dear Webmaster,

I couldn't access your link direct, so please edit this and add to the alumni page. Interesting to see old boys contributing from all over the world. I attended Strodes from 1960-1964. I was a member of the boat club. (The old shack under the bridge)Mr Greely and Mr Wheeler being the masters in charge. Mr Brady was the headmaster. I walked through the school on a Sunday morning when on a visit to the UK in 1963 and would like a more extensive tour on my next visit, probably in 2001. I would like to hear from any contempories of mine. I am about to retire after 30 years as an air traffic controller at Sydney Airport.

Laurie Bromley

35

When I left Strodes in 1996, I didn't expect to miss the college as much as I do. Thank you for providing a way for an ex business studies teacher to "see" the old place. I am down in Gulf Breeze, Florida and would like to hear from anyone who remembers me - especially if you have any gossip!

Pauline Courchene

36

Hello everyone. I am Frank Garner, and was at Strodes from 1957 to 1962, during James Brady's time as Headmaster. I would love to hear from any old school mates. I would be delighted to hear from any former pupils from that era. Does anyone know of what befell: John Lake / Derek Wade / Terry Oliver / Don Wright / Ron Fruen etc. I found this site after having paid a visit to Strodes over the Christmas period to show my son the old school.

I am now living in the West Midlands, and can be contacted vie RuthGarner1@compuserve.com.

I was at Strodes from 1994-97 studying Maths, Physics and Chemistry A Levels. I'm now a Senior Civil Engineer with Ove Arup and Partners. I spent a few years working in the UK and then was asked to go to Hong Kong for a year ... six and a half years later I'm still here! Currently studying for a Masters degree in Interdisciplinary Design for the Built Environment at Cambridge University. Would like to get in touch with Helen John, Vicky, Sam Lucy, Mohan Vadi, all the ex-Heathsiders (Nikki & Michelle Poole, Joanna & Clare Stocks, Tom & Sam Bowtell etc.) & anybody else who remembers the baked potato, cheese & beans in the canteen and Stones ginger wine on a Friday in the pub next to the Egham library. Hope you're all enjoying yourselves !

Cheers,

Gillian Blake, Hong Kong

38

I joined Strodes in second form in 1960, having migrated from Australia. I would like to hear from my old school 4, Derek Wade, Richard Hume, or John Phillips,or any other of my contempories. I have just retired after thirty years as an air traffic controller at Sydney airport. I hope to visit England again soon and pay a visit to Strodes.

Hello everyone, My name is Linda Endersby (nee McKay) David Endersby my husband was at Strode's from 1968 - 1976 and I was there from 1978 - 1980. We met in 1981 and Strode's was a great talking point, we both had very happy memories. We are still in contact with Dave Bartlett and Adrian Lillywhite who were there with David. David went on to Warwick University where he got a B.Sc in Biological Science and I went into nursing at St Peters in Chertsey. We have settled in Chertsey have two children and have been married 17 years. We would love to hear from anyone who remembers either of us

Linda & David

Linda,

I think I remember you. My name is Deborah Ewens (Strodes 1979-82) and I think I was in the same 'O' level Biology class as you. I think the teacher was Mr Stout. I also worked at St Peters Hospital for about 5yrs as an Operating Theatre Technician/Assistant from 1982-87. I lived in Addlestone.

I went around with Andrew Chown, Andrew Pulford, Susan Lowe, Michael Hawkins. I am still in contact with Andrew Chown. We both live in Australia. I'm in Sydney and he's in Brisbane.

If you are the person I think I remember, you were quite tall with blonde wavy/curly hair, blue eyes. I think you also had a sister. I was (and still am!) short with brown hair.

Regards

Deborah Ewens

I was at Strodes from 1954 to 1959 and although I stayed in Surrey until 1995 I only ever saw ONE other old boy, Paul Webb! All my contemporaries seem to have flown south for the autumn of their years since I've been in the southwest I seem to meet old boys all over the place. My elder son married the daughter of another old boy, Carl Perry, from before my time!

Hello, this is Graham Whitworth, at Strode's 1966-73. Anyone from this era in contact on the Web? Please get in touch at Graham.Whitworth@ukgateway.net. To find out what I'm doing now, visit www.whitworthlaw.co.uk. During my time, Mr Evans replaced Mr Brady as Headmaster, and Mr Carter replaced Mr Bloomer as Deputy Head. My first year form master was Mr Bowden and my Sixth Form Tutor was Mr Gouriet - I can't remember all the others in between. A brain teaser for you - whose favourite line was, "Down in a deep, dark hole sat an old cow munching a beanstalk"?

Graham Whitworth

I hope this Hotmail thing works as I dont want to have to use work facilities. Am I the only ex-inmate who has stayed in Surrey, not living in Colorado or Minnesota? Apart from Philip Levy. I found this on a link from the Webcollage site.True fame for Strodes what? I was at Strodes 1970-76 and was one of the first intake as sixth form, although I only lasted a year after that & was asked to head towarsd Brooklands Tech. Setting fire to the common room furniture may have played a part in that.

Is there anyone out there who went to Stratford on Avon, queued for the Rolling Stones, went to Reading Festival/The Roundhouse/Music Machine/Marquee, cycled to The New Forest, Went to The Ship at Shepperton, attended the Faulkners' Sunday soirees, went skiing with Graham Taylor's expeditions, threw Brussels sprouts, or played for Ridge Athletic? The form teachers I remember were: Malcom Harvey, Bertie Bowden, John Severn, ....memory fading now. get in touch,

Nicholas Bentley

Strodes. I had a brilliant time there between 1993-95 (can't believe that it's almost 7 years since I began) and would like to hear from anyone in my year in particular: Clare Pink, Demelza Driver, Mark Flitter, Ian Baldwin, Lyndsey Baldwin, Katie Hall, Nicky Hutchinson, Daniella Stibbs and Gemma Free.

What are you all up to now? I went onto Holloway College (moved far way!) to do a BA and Ma and am currently standing for Runnymede Borough Council. If any of you read this, or anyone else for that matter, please drop me a line. It would be great to hear from you again.

I was at Strodes from 1982 to 1984 and took Maths, Further Maths and Physics A Levels before moving to Brunel University in West London to take Computer Science. Before Strodes I attended Magna Carta. I've been working in IT at Motorola for the last ten years and now live in Andover, Hampshire. People would probably remember me as the one who spent all my time on the college computer (an RML 380Z running CPM) developing the college administration system.

I'd like to hear from anyone who remembers me as I have very fond memories of my time there, the teachers and my fellow students.

Keith Downer

. I was at Strode's 1966 - 1973 and would like to hear from anyone who shared the experience with me - staff, fellow class mates or boat club members.

Chris Lake

46
.I was a Strodes from 1970-1977, which meant I was there at the start of the transitional period from Grammar school to Sixth Form college. I took A-levels in Maths, Physics and Chemistry, so have fond (?) memories of teachers such as: Daphne Bayne, Chris Mills, Barry Brett, Ernie? Elliot and Mr Webb (Quakers!). I kept a diary during the sixth form period, so the names of many of my peers are still fresh in my mind. Looking through it recently, all I seemed to do is play chess! Despite middling A/L grades, I now find myself as a lecturer in Computer Science at the University of Kent: http://www.cs.ukc.ac.uk/people/staff/djb/ and I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me.

David J. Barnes

47
.Hi, I attended Strodes from 69-75, and have lost track of just about everyone apart from Pat Acres. We were having a conversation recently and tried remembering the members of our year but unfortunately I think too many beers have been consumed since then. Can anybody help ? Is anybody in regular contact with anyone else?

P.S. Michael Swain I haven't seen him for a while but if you want to get in touch with Dale Franklin he is a presenter on the QVC shopping channel.

Wayne Nichols

I like the word Alumni. It sounds better than Old Strodians (or Strodites as I remember the Magna Carta inmates called us). I turned up most schooldays between '65 and '72. What is it about attending Strodes that means you subsequently have to leave the country? I'm currently based in San Francisco as a Director for the second largest software company in the world (we'll get there!) but still live in England.

I'm in touch with others of that period and have emails addresses for Brian Hayward, Nick Stuart, Chris Tite and Andy Gray (one of whom is married to a Sir Williams Perkins graduate and two of whom also live abroad). Did the relationship with Sir Willaims Perkins always exist while Strodes was boys only?

Reference the relationship with Sir William Perkins. I remember us boys being called to task over our practice of cheering the Willie Perkins girls when we played hockey against each other. As I had not been in touch with anyone from the school since leaving in 1953 I did not realise that others had also travelled. During my time with the RAF, I was based in Egypt, Cyprus and then Aden. Subsequently my work has taken me to Egypt (18 months), Qatar (two years) and now Belgium/Netherlands (total of eight years now).

Just a short message to stir up some old fogies like myself, about to retire or already have done.I attended Strodes 1948-53,and would be delighted to hear from any contemporaries.I still have happy memories of schooldays, when in attempt to fight of old age I carry out a daily series of physical exercises taught by Mr Greene the old PT master. For the last 20yrs I have lived in Valley Forge Pa USA

I was at Strode's 1970-1977. I remember the sprouts battles in Room 4 and the broken windows we replaced with coloured glass, a strange smell of rotting veg which the teachers couldn't trace, playing rugby with Yank as the ball, a highly inflammable common room which doubled as a sports ground, being "taken out of circulation", the Austin-Morris 1100 which took months of work in the bitter cold to put together and then was on the road for just 18 days before someone drove it into a tree, a conference on the EU which somehow led to 3 suspensions, Stratford, Reading, the Roundhouse, having to knock on some poor resident's door late at night to borrow a boat cos Steve Payne got halfway across the Thames and then forgot how to swim, etc etc.

I and family now live in West Drayton and I work in Brentford for a computer company called Morse. I still see Steve Nash, Steve Payne, Phil Levy and Gerry Cox from time to time and it's nice to see a few familiar names here - anyone else out there? Mike Cook 6-11-2000

Hi there! Don't know if anyone out there remembers me, but my name is John Murphy and I attended Strode's between 1995 and 1997, when I did 'A' level Music Technology, Media Studies and English Literature (I was the really tall one with the centre parting!). A friend told me about the Alumni site and I'd just like to say well done - great idea!

If there's anyone reading this that was at Strode's with me, I would love to hear from you and find out what you've been up to since - people from any of the classes I was in, the artists formerly known as Ripe, anyone involved in the play "The Visit" (remember Pedro??), the making of the documentary "Police Watch!" or anyone else that remembers a boy in a dress collecting for Children In Need!!

I'd also love to hear from any of my old teachers if you're out there (you know who you are). Take care and keep up the good work! (You can contact me at: merfy79@hotmail.com)

I remember the old computer room when I was there from 86-88 - lot's of BBC micros and that big monster in the corner scrolling green text. And now it seems like everyone has got a Web page. I bet you wouldn't believe that when I got out of Oxford in 92 with quite a lot more computing under my belt, a media company that I applied for in Soho turned me down because of my "wacky" internet strategy (i.e. it might be worth looking into!!!!!!!!!!!). took the wind out of my sails for a long time, I can tell you (but mind you, even Bill Gates was a little confused about it all at that time).

Anyway, I digress! Nice to see you on the Web. I now contract work for BUPA as a (surprise surprise) IT consultant (take it from me, this internet thing might be big one day! see, it's easy). Give me a shout if you can remember me, or even better, get out the yearbook and laugh yourself silly for five minutes at the picture in the chemistry section of me with a fantastic perm. I swear it was very stylish at the time. (Picture was taken by one Mr Ashley Watson, now a very successful dentist in Canterbury).

p.s. if the webmaster wants to establish an alumni comedy haircuts page, he/she has my permission.

Phil Burness

Nice to read the messages from old co-inmates, though none from my own year yet.

I was at Strodes from 1966 to 73, just before the 6th form college days, and am still in touch with a couple of old friends. I did A-levels in Physics and Maths and followed that with a stint at UCW Aberystwyth, before turning to the commercial world. I've now spent 24 years in the software industry, through project management to sales.

Anyone remember lunchtimes on the pinball machine down the Station Cafe, or clubbing together to borrow records from Recordwise?

Like many others, I fell upon the web site and its Freudian typo ('amore highly educated and adaptable population'..) while looking for something else. I wonder if anyone out there was at Strodes between 1956-59? A short visit for me (I was moved around the school system somewhat), but an interesting one. Now, after 30 years in the travel business I work at PricewaterhouseCoopers - not as a mega-paid accountant I fear, just a senior administrator in Graduate Recruitment.

Hi, I attended Strodes from 1989 - 1991 and studied Geography, Chemistry and Biology. Additionally, my sister Joanna attended three years later. I would like to hear from anyone who remembers standing in the corridor at the far end, near the staff house and getting chucked out by any passing members of staff, usually into the rain from which we were sheltering!

Anyway, I still collect shells and am interested in Astronomy (anyone remember the SAS?) and still play the piano very loudly whenever I get the chance. Looking forward to hearing from whoever,

nice to see the old place going cyber ! A far reach from the "If" -like days of 1976... Does anyone else remember those days ? If you do & want to contact Martin Nichols (the fat filmmaker & "Moon" in a really rather brilliant version of "The Real Inspector Hound" directed by Chris Mayewski) do drop me a line .

Hi. I'm John Martins (1960 - 65). In my memories of Strode's it always seemed to be summertime. Trainspotting featured strongly too. I was in awe of a maths teacher, Gareth Mathias, who played Rugby for the London Welsh and had no problems controlling a classroom!

I've lived and worked in Auckland, New Zealand, since 1974, where I'm an Associate in a human resource consulting practice, www.sheffield.co.nz . I still have a connection with the local area, however, as my parents are retired at Laleham and my sister has a dental practice in Langley.

I visit UK on an irregular basis and it is always pleasant to catch up with the Surrey lifestyle.

Best Wishes

John Martins

Hi! I was at Strodes for half a term in the autumn of 1999. I studied English, Maths, Biology and Psychology and was really enjoying college but had to leave for personal reasons. Unfortunately I didn't get the chance to say goodbye to some of my friends so Franci Humphries, Jenny Bishop, Craig Elkington, Dawn Millest etc, SORRY!! I didn't mean to leave you in the lurch and if you want to e-mail me the address is hazellnuts80@hotmail.com Maybe I'll see you soon as I'm now back in the Weybridge area.

Hi, I'm Tony Benson, left Strodes to immigrate to Australia in 1952, while in my final year. Graduated from Sydney Uni. Don't recognise any names entered in the alumni. My close friend was Michael Hoggard. If anyone knows him, I'd like to get in touch. I'm currently Chairman of four software companies and on many government IT advisory boards. One of my companies has an Internet collaboration product if anyone is interested in meeting over the 'Net.

Hello! I'm Tim Holt and left Strodes in 1970. It's nice to see some familiar names and very surprising to see girls names as old Strodians too. It would have been a welcome addition in my day, but probably too distracting. Things that stick in my mind about Strodes are Mr (Jock) Brady (the head - very scary), various punishments via plimsoll and retort stand (no names-wouldn't be allowed now-although I expect most teachers and parents wish it still was). Funny thing that Jock thought rugby too dangerous, so played hockey-far more dangerous in my opinion.

Also remember the house system, I was in Coopers - the best house of course! Little blue ribbon on the blazer - I think. It would be good to hear from anyone around my era, especially if they are in Scotland! I work for Strathclyde University in their Institute of Photonics as the Business Development Manager. Nice to see so many people still remember Strodes with some sort of fondness. Kind regards

Tim Holt

I am dumbfounded I have just read through all of the 58 mail messages from our schools alumni and though I did not come across any students that I remember there were quite a few teacher references that rang some bells.

I was at Strodes Grammar School from 1952 to 1957 and I believe that we were the worst bunch around for many a year, James (Jock) Brady was our Principal, Buster Brown was principal in charge of vice, and I have fond memories of many of the teaching staff, Sticky Stamp(Geography), HoraceCope (History) who was also the headmaster of Paice House - green (the others were Coopers - Blue, Strodes - Red, and Charter-Yellow) do the houses still exist?. Other teachers were Mullholland (Latin), Doris Hart (French), Ashdown (Art), Cranky Cranham (Music) Holford (Science and Math).

They were carefree times where field hockey (especially against Sir William Perkins School), Football, Cross Country up Coopers Hill and across Runnymede and Cricket seem to fill the calendar. I left Strodes and went into the computer business with a company in London called Leo Computers on Minerva Road in North Acton, went to Brooklands and Kingston Colleges and then emigrated to Canada in 1964, been here ever since and I live in London Ontario.

I would love to hear from you and share memories.

Hi there to all old Strodes students from 1981 to 1983. I'm Adriana Barnes (nee Pizzoferro), yes I did marry Rob! Strodes was a great place for me - an escape from Salesian and I confess the place I have best memories of. Particularly good ones from English Lit and Drama, if anyone remembers 'Joseph Andrews' I'd love to reminisce. Can't believe it's more than 20 years since that French history trip. And Chris Majeweski if you're still out there all was not lost, I finally graduated in English Lit and Art History in 1995 five weeks after the birth of my second daughter!. In my case maturity proved the best incentive for studying!

After his great efforts at the boat club Rob gave up the sport to take an HND in Building followed by a degree in Engineering (civil and structural) and is now a Chartered Engineer. Gave up visiting Henley a few years ago - Stewards Enclosure no good when you've got four under 10! Never lost the taste for Pimms though! (Jeanette, Rebecca, Helen, Marika if you're still out there I'd love to chat).

Regards. Adriana

What an interesting web site and what memories it provokes just reading through messages from people I haven't even met before!!

I was at Strodes 1961 -1964 when it was still a Grammar School..I was only there for three years and left to continue my school education in Liverpool. But over the years I have driven past several times and I can remember the old place like it was last week. I was in Paice House and was keen on sports including football, cross country and athletics and I remember how much I enjoyed running round Runnymede and up over the hill past the Airforce Memorial!!

Its impressive to see how many former Strodians have gone on to hold positions of influence across the planet! Does anyone agree that it would be great to set up an Alumni Directory?

Hi everyone - my brother Stuart and I attended Strodes until we emigrated to Canada in November 1972. We are now both living in the USA. Stuart works for EDS and I am currently working for Boeing. We have great memories of Strodes - we seem to have forgotten the bad ones!

I would love to hear from old school chums especially Nick Higgins, Dale Squire, Julian Faulkner, Neil Burroughs, Neil Cately, Duncan Banks, Matthew ?, to name a few off the top of my head if anyone know there whereabouts. I still can't believe that Dale killed my pet rabbit!

Like others, I was fascinated to read your postings. I like the idea of using a Class Of annotation. Like the Americans. I don't copy them in all respects! I'm Class of '42 which our less enlightened brethren may not know, was in the middle of the Second World War. Yes, I too experienced three headmasters while there. Captain J Mylam Gittens, Bowie Heddon (for one disastrous year) and then Jim Brady.

It was a boy's school of course, and for the first time ever, due to the call up of male teachers on active service, we had female teachers. Even now I can remember how well endowed Miss Barnes was, above the plimsoll line.

Our schooling was, relatively speaking, a disaster. We had no materials. Classes were disrupted by air raid warnings and we dived into the cellars full (as Dudley Moore would have said) of "dusty substances".

There was a time when I thought we had it bad, but looking at the world today, in terms of freedom, respect and personal happiness, I realise that we had it all. Every day offered the prospect of adventure, especially when Squint Holford, who organised rowing, reminded us that in his younger days he operated in the services (I think) East of Suez. The days of the Empire. Aaah.

When I've finished this letter, which is now, I intend to send a seperate one to someone up the list who appears to have the same pedigree as myself, in terms of interesting schooldays. Otherwise, thanks for listening.

What a site and what memories. Shame to see no listings from classmates in my year from 1974 - 1981 apart from Nigel Weare. I got back in contact with Nigel again recently through these pages.

I am now living in rural Norfolk (near Swaffham) and work in ICT for a Housing Association.

It would be great to hear from anyone from those years who remembers me (from School or College) or any of the teachers - Rita Clegg (French and Spanish), Mr Brett, Phil Bowden, Malcolm Harvey etc.

Like many others I came acrosss this site purely by accident!

I was at Strodes from 1960 to 1968. I was School Captain from 1967 - 1968 before I went to St Mary's Hospital Medical School in London. I'm now living in Manchester where I'm now a medical epidemiologist with the (new) Health Protection Agency. I've had involvement with the BSE/CJD crisis of the 1990s and, more recently, with planning for events such as the deliberate release of smallpox.

I have vivid memories of Strodes and Egham in the 1960s (Jock Brady, Buster Brown, Jim Cameron, Scrub Ashdown, Sticky Stamp etc) and will admit (under duress) to also being interested in trains!!

I'd be happy to hear from anyone else there at the same time. Please contact me at mikepainter@doctors.org.uk

I remember Linda McKay the year that I attended Strodes, 1979. My name is Erin Penncacchio, formerly Shannon. I was a Canadian student on a visa for a year. Linda I still have a photo of you dressed as Laurel[of Laurel & Hardy] at Seonee Toogoods' fancy dress party[roaring 20's I think]. I had a great year a Strodes and I visited this past Sept., I now live in Hollywood, CA with my husband of 10 years. I'd love to hear from you Linda or any others who would like to contact me!!
