Strode's Theatre Company at Edinburgh Fringe

Strode's Theatre Company at Edinburgh Fringe

21st August, a bright and early start as the train whisks us on our merry way to Edinburgh. No time like the present to promote the show, so we hand out our first flyer to a couple sitting opposite us on the train. A mere 1999 to go. 5 hours pass in a frenzy of sticking, stapling and stitching as we construct costumes for the Royal Mile, the best place to promote our show. Coats, bras and tutus strewn with Post-it Notes and a jumper covered with fridge letters, we look a discrete bunch as we clamber off the train.

Greeted by a sea of performance folk and more tacky Scottish gift shops than we could have wished for, we soon settle in. The tech rehearsal goes without a hitch, (unless you count unexpected changes in the stage space and the absence of several essential documents), but nonetheless the level of anticipation towards our first performance is high.

In due course the show does fairly well. Several disasters, the most exciting of which involving a chair and resulting in a badly sprained arm on Hazel's part, are balanced out with a positive reception and the joyful sound of a tittering audience. They are laughing, they actually enjoy the play! Hallelujah.

There are highs and lows throughout the week, but overall a great enjoyment of the piece and indeed the festival in itself. The good news is we made a £24.40 profit. Each! - Admittedly our mood was dampened slightly with the knowledge that a friendly improv group we met along the way had made over £700 each by mid run of their show.... But there’s always next year. We can dream. And I am most certainly going to frame that £20 note.

So, at the end of a packed week we head home, shortbread in hand. The first day in 6 weeks that we haven’t been rehearsing, researching or discussing our play. The feeling of freedom is immense, we can finally relax. And so naturally, by the time we arrive back in Kings Cross that evening, plans for next year are well underway! Watch this space.

SWISH THEATRE IS THE STRODE'S THEATRE COMPANY FOR CURRENT AND EX-STUDENTS AND IS OPEN TO ALL MEMBERS OF THE COLLEGE
