Strode’s Students Visit EU
First year A level Politics students Mairead Finlay and Dhanya Acharya have just returned from the trip of a life-time, a visit to the Headquarters of the European Commission in Brussels.
Mairead and Dhanya were the winners of the EA/CoR* Schools competition for 2012 and won an all-expenses paid trip to learn more about the workings and mechanisms of the EU. They won the competition by submitting an essay about the EU. The EU is celebrating the elderly in 2012 and the girls had to imagine they were a local regional Mayor and put forward ideas about how they would support the elderly in their region. Their essays were judge to be well-evaluated and researched, thus resulting in this wonderful opportunity.
They were able to meet the President of the Committee of the Regions as well as of the European Council and visited the European Parliament and the European Council. They were able to meet other students from member states, participate in discussions and gave a presentation about their region.
The girls thoroughly enjoyed their trip but were also able to taste some of the delights of Brussels, such as Belgian waffles and chocolate!
