Last Tuesday Strode’s Ladies were crowned Surrey Cup and League Winners after a 6-4 victory over Reigate. Strode’s dominated in what was a tense match and despite a first half double from Rachel Johnson, the team found themselves 4-2 down at half time. The girls were determined not to lose the silver wear they had already won from last season. Two superb goals from Tiffany Skinner and Ellie Teverson soon levelled the scores. At 4-4 Reigate won a controversial penalty. Under enormous pressure, keeper Jess Brown pulled off a stunning save to keep the girls in the game. Tiff and Ellie went on to score another goal each to seal the victory for the girls.
This caps what has been another fantastic season for the Strode’s Ladies Football Team. It means they have now gone two season undefeated in Surrey, winning the League, Cup and 5 a-side competitions. With only four defeats in two season, they have also been impressive on both a Regional and National level, getting to the British Colleges South East Final, the semi-final of the South-East 5 a-side and the Quarter Finals of the English Schools National Cup, beating some of the top Academies along the way.
This is no doubt due to the effort and enthusiasm of all the girls. Captain and central midfielder Mica Powick has lead by example all season, organising the girls on and off the pitch and being a constant driving force in both attack and defence. Wingers Megan Hicks and Jess Barnes have continuously worked hard, allowing attackers Tiff Skinner, Ellie Teverson and Rachel Johnson to score close on 70 goals between them! However, it is not all about scoring goals, and Keeper Jess Brown and the defensive partnership of Rose Brown and Luci Smith have been impressive all season, whilst special mentions must go to Grace Bertram and Issy Harvey, two wingers who have been playing out of position as full backs all season.
