We are delighted to announce that a number of Strode’s students have received offers from Oxford University for September 2017.
The ‘A*spire’ programme is designed to support the most gifted and talented students to expand above and beyond their capacity. Our programme builds their confidence and skills to articulate well-reasoned thoughts, challenge conventional thinking and build strong arguments. We have support sessions on personal statements, interview techniques and understanding the competitive selection process. This programme stretches students through assignments designed to meet the entry requirements for these elite universities.
Our 18 and 19 year olds students received the exciting news following a lengthy application and selection process which included very tough interviews at the universities. Max Bowman will be reading Engineering, Cerys Halligan will be reading Philosophy, Politics and Economics while Jack Glasper will be reading History.
Max Bowman, who achieved great results from The Magna Carta School with 5 A*, 2 A grades and 2 B grades, is now working towards achieving fantastic results at Strode’s before attending Oxford University, to study Engineering. Max underwent three 40 minute interviews on Maths, Physics, and Engineering. Max commented, “The process was fairly stressful by nature. I couldn't sleep the night before, and my first interview at 8:30am didn't go well! However, I felt I performed much better in my second interview and I received an offer from this interview.”
Cerys Halligan, who achieved amazing results from The Magna Carta School with 7 A* and 3 A grades is also predicted excellent A Levels results from Strode’s and is planning to read Politics, Philosophy and Economics. Cerys said, “The interview process was very daunting, but it was great to spend time with other applicants and meet the people I would potentially be studying alongside. I was also lucky enough to stay in Oxford for 3 nights during the interview process which really gave me a feel for the university environment.”
Jack Glasper, who previously attended Thomas Knyvett College, came to Strode’s College with excellent GCSE results, 3 A*s, 4 As, 2 Bs and 1 D is currently studying Early Modern History, English Literature and Government and Politics. Jack commented that, “As the oldest university in the English speaking world it is a great place to study history because the university itself is immersed so fully by history, and therefore it was a good fit for my passion.”
Congratulations go to all of our future Oxbridge students on their success. Rowan Cookson, Strode’s Principal, said “These offers are excellent news for the students, their teachers, and the College. We encourage all our students to aim high and we are delighted that the rewards have paid off. Our structured ‘A*spire’ programme prepares the students for all aspects of the application and interview process, so these students really deserve this success! I’d also like to congratulate all the Strode’s students who applied to Oxbridge this year and to thank the teachers and support staff who helped them with their applications.”
This year, 316 Strode’s students have applied to university. We wish them all the very best of luck with their applications and look forward to hearing about their offers as they start to arrive!’
