The Principal opened the first student parliament of the academic year and described it as ‘an excellent way for our students to express their learner voice’.
The Students Union came together with the tutor reps to discuss issues of concern and priorities for the next academic year. A varity of responses demonstrated that we have some confident, articulate advocates for change. It also suggested that there are lots of successful and popular aspects to college life.
Students expressed a desire for a wider range of Student Union event and activities. The Student Union are meeting soon to brainstorm their ideas and to discuss which ones they’d like to focus on. The Charity Committee also managed to get some enthusiastic suggestions and they’ll be publicising their first event soon.
To improve Learner Voice, students asked for a wider range of methods for collecting ideas, including a suggestions box, more regular but shorter Parliament meetings and incentives for taking part.
As a college, we will be studying the comments from students carefully and will update them on discussions as soon as possible.
Two further parliaments will be held later on in the year.
