Strode’s Music Twinning trip to Joinville-le-Pont

Strode’s Music Twinning trip to Joinville-le-Pont (near Paris)

Towards the end of last term, two music teachers (Diane McGuire & Tony Woods) and 20 musicians from our student and adult Jazz Big Bands participated in an exciting jazz weekend in Paris. If you search You Tube (Joinville Jumelage 2011) you should find a short film of the weekend (in French!).

The Music Department Twinning weekend is an annual event that has been going for 25 years and brings together musicians from our 2 twinned towns. Strode’s College Music Dept joins the Music School from Joinville-le-Pont near Paris and the Max Bruch Musikschule (specifically a New Orleans style marching band called The Max Brassers) from Bergisch-Gladbach near Cologne.

Last year it was our turn to host the event, and next year  will be going to Germany.

The aim of these weekends is to come together to rehearse as a large group, to produce a joint concert on the Saturday evening, to play in an improvised jam session, and to socialise with musicians from different cultures. We have found that many of the friendships that started with a Twinning weekend have lasted for years. The concert has solo items from each country followed by joint pieces by one of the biggest Big Bands you would ever come across!

This years’ setlist shows the wide variety of music we play.

        1.   ‘Got To Get You Into My Life’ –    Lennon & McCartney
        2.
‘Cheek To Cheek’ –                       Irving Berlin
        3.   ‘Off Duty’-                                          Johnny Dankworth
        4. ‘The Nearness of You’ –                 Hoagy Carmichael
        5. ‘Why Don’t You Do Right’? –          Joe McCoy
        6.  ‘Route 66’ –                                      Bob Troup
        7.
 ‘Four’ –                                               Miles Davis
        8.
‘Boom Boom’ -                                 John Lee Hooker

The students stayed with host families and were treated to a wonderful weekend including an afternoon of sightseeing in Paris and a celebration final meal in a local restaurant. Our thanks go to the Runnymede Town Twinning Association for subsidising our students’ fares on Eurostar.

If you would like to hear our Jazz Big Bands in action, look out for our dates next year at Jagz Jazz Club in Ascot (next to the station).
