Strode's Girls continue to Triumph

Strode’s Girls Football Team continue to enjoy fantastic success

Strode’s 9 -0 West Suffolk Sports Academy

On Wednesday 7th December Strode’s faced West Suffolk Sports Academy in the last 16 of the English Schools National Cup. Having got knocked out at this stage last season, the team was determined to go one better and make it into the quarter finals. Strode’s started off well, with strike partners Tiffany Skinner and Rachel Johnson yet again linking up well to score 6 between them! Ellie Teverson soon added another, whilst defenders Grace Bertram and Luci Smith wrapped up another impressive display. The girls have now made it further in this competition than any other Football Team from the College…ever, and will play Southgate College in what is sure to be a very tough Quarter Final.

Worthing 0 – 3 Strode’s

The girls travelled to Worthing on Friday 9th December, ready to battle Worthing for a place in the Semi-Finals of the British Colleges Cup. Worthing were entering the tie on a winning streak, having only narrowly lost 3-2 to Chelsea FC, but, as always, Strode’s were ready to put up a fight. The game got off to a fantastic start when Tiffany Skinner unleashed a shot from the edge of the area to put Strode’s 1-0 up within the first minute. The girls continued to work hard, closing down Worthing, and Ellie Teverson curled the ball into the back of the net to make it 2-0 to Strode’s. Worthing started the second half well, and keeper Jess Brown made some excellent saves to keep Strode’s in the game. Battling performances from Captain Mica Powick and defenders Rose Brown and Luci Smith ensured that Strode’s kept a clean sheet. The girls wrapped the game up in style when Jess Barnes delivered a pinpoint corner for Tiffany Skinner to thunder a left footed volley and her second goal to make the final score 3-0.

This is a huge achievement for a College the size of Strode’s, but also for the girls yet again punching well above their weight competing against Academy sides who not only field International players but also have England Internationals as their coaches!

The photo has some people missing in the photo but the squad is Mica Powick (Captain), Tiffany Skinner, Jess Barnes, Connie Reynolds, Ellie Teverson, Rachel Johnson, Luci Smith, Jess Brown, Rose Brown, Grace Bertram, Issy Harvey, Megan Hicks, Alex Hale, Gabby Corsini, Rhianne Connell.

The Girls currently lie top of the Surrey League, being undefeated and scoring an incredible 45 goals.

Other impressive displays this season have been a 2-0 victory over the University of Surrey First XI and a 1-1 draw with Royal Holloway First XI, as well as reaching the quarter finals of the British Colleges 5 a-side.
