The alTURNERtive Art Award
The alTURNERtive Art Award is Strode's College's answer to the world famous Turner Prize. It is its second year and generated a large number of entries from the College's Art students
The Art Departrment offers Advanced level courses in Fine Art, Textiles, Photography as well as a BTEC course that allows combinations of Art disciplines.
20 students were short-listed and this year's competition featured exhibits from all disciplines. The work was exhibited last week and judged on the 23rd November by Strode's Principal, Anne Fielding Smith and guest of honour, Steven Joyce. Steven is a former Strode's student and now a nationally renowned sculptor.
In awarding the prize, Steven spoke of the exciting, original and vibrant nature of the Art work on display. He also congratulated the College on offering such a wide range of Art courses and the encouragement students are given to express themselves, though, hardly surprisingly, he would like to see more sculpture
The short list was further broken down to 5 finalists, Laurie Young, Leo Bowyer, Joanna Korzeniowska (who all submitted paintings), and Laura Kerr and Ciana O’Reilly whose exhibits were Textiles based
The difficult decision was made to choose an overall winner with the prize going to Joanna Korzeniowska, pictured receiving her award with Principal Anne Fielding Smith and Art tecaher Elaine Butler.
