Continued Sporting Success
Strode's sports' teams are close to becoming amongst the best in the country. Read on!
The following players are through to the last round of England Under 19 trials in three different sports!
· Haluna Masembe and Luke Neville have got through to Final England Colleges Football trials to be held at Lilleshall National Sports Centre.
· James Laszlo has got through to Final England Colleges Hockey trials to be held at Cannock Hockey club (Top club in England).
· Matt Midgley has got through to Final Basketball trials.
Congratulations must also go to Tiffany Skinner and Goal Keeper Jess Brown for being selected for the final 16 of the South East England Girls Football squad. Last week the South East played the South West in the final selection phase We are still awaiting the selection results…however, to get to where they have got is an incredible achievement for both girls as every other player is part of a College with an associated ‘Professional’ Academy and there were also some well-established England Internationals there.
The College 1st 15 this week scrapped out a close fought victory over The Sixth Form College Farnborough in the 3rd round of the British Colleges Cup. The winning margin was 43-41. Another late night for the PE department, but all worthwhile as the department progresses in both National and Local competitions.
Also our 4th round Daily Mail fixture in Bedford resulted in a WIN 44-0 and we are in the next round. It appears that we will play at home against Latymer Upper School in a fortnight's time.
Strode’s Girls Football Team are continuing to build on the success from last season. The season started with Godalming cancelling our warm-up match, meaning the girls had to go straight into their first competitive fixture against Woking. This didn’t seem to have an effect on the team, however, as the final score was 15-0 to Strode’s, with Jess Barnes, Tiffany Skinner, Grace Bertram and Issy Harvey all bagging a brace of goals!
Over the summer Strode’s College and Royal Holloway University started to work together to develop girls football in the area. Part of this meant the girls being invited to participate in a University Tournament. Unsurprisingly they were a little apprehensive about competing with Universities but their nerves soon started to settle after beating Holloway 2nd XI 7-0. Next up came a 2-0 victory against the University of Surrey, leaving Strode’s to battle it out with Royal Holloway 1st XI for the trophy. Unfortunately the game finished 1-1, so we are awaiting a rematch!
Yesterday the girls played Berkshire for a place in the last 16 of the English Schools National Cup. An excellent first half performance meant that strikers Tiffany Skinner and Rachael Johnson scored 8 goals between them. The second half continued much in the same way as the first half ended, with Ellie Teverson scoring two blinding free kicks and Captain Mica Powick scoring her 4th goal of the season to make the final score 17-0 to Strode’s.
After a tough match against The John Madjeski Academy in Reading, the girls are through to the quarter finals of the British Colleges Cup…however, we are due to play Berkshire again so am waiting to see if this match will go ahead!
