art and design students have insight into building new dreams

art and design students have insight into build...
As part of a joint community engagement plan, Area Sq has welcomed sixteen of our A2 Art and Design students, students from the Royal Holloway and the University of London to the new EMEA Headquarters being constructed for Enterprise Holdings at Integra House and Assurance House in a campus setting in Egham. Such was the demand from Strode’s College that the students were split into two groups on consecutive weeks.

The student tour began at Area Sq head office at The Old Post Office, Egham where Clive Lucking, Chief Executive of parent company Fourfront Group, gave a presentation on the background of the project including the original pitch to Enterprise, highlighting the core aims and objectives. Bacon butties and drinks were provided to fuel students before the short walk from The Old Post Office to the site, located half a mile away in Egham.

Accompanying the project manager and site manager for this extensive office refurbishment programme, students had the opportunity to tour the two buildings on the campus and learn how Area Sq is transforming these buildings in to a modern, dynamic, state-of-the-art new home for Enterprise. Students also learned how Area Sq approach and manage a design and fit-out project and were really appreciative of Enterprise Holdings for allowing them behind the scenes to assist them with their studies.

Students showed a particular interest in the building’s sustainability credentials, which are a core feature in the design and fit-out of this project. In fact, Area Sq and Enterprise are working towards achieving a RICS Ska Rating Gold – the highest rating for a sustainable office refurbishment project.

Jim Brennan, teacher at Strode’s College, accompanied the students on both visits and said: “This was a marvellous opportunity for our students to see the workings of a really dynamic and progressive local company in Egham. We were all really impressed with the vision for the project and how Area Sq is delivering this major project. It has helped them contextualise some of their learning and inspired them in their project work.”

David, a local student from the college, said; “I've learnt a lot about what goes into an office build as well as how much design work goes on behind the scenes. After visiting the Area Sq offices and the building site, I now more than ever want to achieve my dream of becoming an architect”.

Students will be returning to Integra Park in April for a tour of the completed Enterprise EMEA Headquarters.
