Anne Fielding Smith, Strode’s College Principal, and Isabel Trapp, 2013 graduate of Strode’s College, are seen here with Michael Zuckerman, Master of The Worshipful Company of Coopers, after attending an exclusive Coopers’ Court Dinner where Isabel exchanged indentures with the Master. Also exchanging indentures with the Master was George West, who was accompanied by David Parry, Headteacher of The Coopers’ Company & Coburn School.
The Worshipful Company of Coopers is a member of the City of London’s Livery Companies, historically connected with the manufacture of wine barrels, and a major conduit for charitable giving. Trustees representing the Company sit on the Strode’s Foundation, which is a registered charity charged with carrying out the wishes of Henry Strode since 1704, when he bequeathed £6,000 to establish a school of learning in Egham.
The appointment of an apprentice to the Master, chosen annually from Strode's College and The Coopers’ Company & Coburn School, is one of the many ways in which the Company maintains its links with its ancient charities … these days, however, you don’t have to make wine barrels to become the Master’s apprentice! The duties of the modern apprentice entail maintaining regular contact with the Master during the four year apprenticeship and representing the Company at a number of social functions. Once the apprenticeship has been served, the apprentice is usually given the dual honours of ‘freedom of the company’, and alongside this, ‘freedom of the City of London’.
Isabel was selected as this year’s prestigious Strode’s apprentice by the Master, Michael Zuckerman. Isabel applied for this position in writing along with many other Strode's students. Isabel’s letter stood out due to her academic achievements, position as a Student Governor within the College and her plans to read Law at the University of Kent including a year in China.
