SUPPORT AT STRODE'S COLLEGE

Minimize

We welcome applications from learners with disabilities, learning difficulties and medical conditions.

Strode’s has a proven track record of helping such learners to be successful and move on to their next step in employment or education.  We support students with a wide range of conditions such as Aspergers Syndrome, sensory impairment, ADHD, dyslexia and diabetes.

There are opportunities for you to tell us about any disabilities, learning difficulties and medical conditions on your application form, at interview, at enrolment or at any time during your course.

It is helpful if you tell us when you apply, so that we can discuss support that is available to help you through the joining process and prepare for when you start your courses.  We will also agree with you who has access to this information about you.

Your needs may include:

  • Access to parking and buildings
  • Adapted equipment
  • Help from readers or note-takers
  • Materials in different formats
  • Special examination arrangements
  • Use of assistive technology such as speech recognition software
  • 1-1 support

Information on courses is made available where possible, on request, in a variety of forms suitable to the individual student's requirements.

If you would like more information or have questions, please contact our Additional Learning Support Manager, Nick Levy, by phone or email NLevy@strodes.ac.uk

Staff are available to help access books and software.  Enlarged print books can be ordered for visually impaired students and staff and there is a growing collection of video and CD Rom material.  The Centre has a mezzanine floor which does not have wheelchair access but which contains no resources or equipment that are not also provided on the ground floor.

Physical Access To Facilities

Access to Buildings
There is access by lift to the first floor of the Main Block, Science and IT Block, Founders Building (Art and Design), Student Centre (including Student Services on the first floor), Tercentenary Building and Drama Studio.  There is access by ramps to both Almshouses.  Where access to classroom accommodation is not possible, the College will re-locate classes where it is reasonable and practicable to do so.  The College does not have hoist facilities.

Medical and First Aid
The College has a first aid room (with lift access) and first aid facilities but is currently unable to offer suitable provision for students and staff needing specialised personal care support or qualified medical supervision.

Parking
There is reserved parking space for disabled students in two areas on the main College site.

Provision for Deaf/Hearing Impaired Students
Induction loops have been fitted in three areas of the College as well as a system built into the reception desk.

Toilets
Toilets for the disabled are located in four buildings on the main College site and in the Community Learning Centre at the Literary Institute.

Access to the Literary Institute in Egham High Street
The parts of the Literary Institute used by the College are accessible via the side entrance.  Door widths meet standards for wheelchairs and emergency exits are ramped.  Workstations are the correct height to give clearance for wheelchairs.

Access to Outreach Centres
The College operates adult classes in a number of community venues.  Venues are checked for accessibility.  Where no suitable accessible venue is available in a particular locality, wherever possible the College will make alternative provision in another location that is accessible.
